IN THE NAME OF GOD THE COMPASSIONATE THE MERCIFUL

THIS DAY IN HISTORY
*Subject: Sayyid Kotb’s Martyrdom
*Date: 29th of August 1966
*Place: Cairo , Egypt
*Elapsed Time: Day for Day: 45 years
*Main Historic Figures: Sayyid Kotb, Nasser.

The story of Sayyid Qotb or Syed Kutb (1906-1966), is a genuine example of Muslim passion of the twentieth Century the life of this prominent Egyptian ideologue of the Muslim Brotherhood is instructive in numerous ways.
His fearless opposition to wrong in both social and personal forms and of remarkable capacity to suffer even in the face of callous witness for the sake of ultimate convictions , born in 1906 in a small Egyptian village , Qotb went on to study Literature at Cairo University.
His unquenchable search for learning brought him to the United States in the 1940s and after a period of research, he returned to his native land, thoroughly disillusioned with the West and its culture, from the early 1950s onwards, and until his Martyrdom on the 29th of August 1966, he stood unequivocally for the pristine Islam of the first Muslim community.
The happy encounter with the teachings of Hassan Al Banna ‘s (Rahimahou Allah) Muslim Brotherhood had indeed absorbed Qotb’s allegiance and gave colour to his ambitions as the Brotherhood matches much of Qotb’s tendency in view of the latter’s emphasis on the High Virtues of Islam as a unified enterprise of a universal faith and wide public ideology.
Sayyid Qotb was instinctively attracted to clear interpretation of Islam that took into account the paramount issues of justice and oppression and mostly important provided a workable mechanism for effecting redress and curing social ills that were prevailing in the Muslim society, for Qotb: undoubtedly Islam had to be the Answer.
After several years of purely verbal and generally fruitless preaching , Qotb became increasingly convinced that he had to face the entire power structure that resisted the implementation of Islam , he saw that any lack of activism at that crucial hour would be effectively a form of compromise with wrong.
The news of the removal of King Farouk on the 23rd of July 1952 by the Free Officers Movement dominated the scene , but much to the chagrin of the oppressed Egyptian masses as well as the to leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood , the whole matter was no better than a change of tyrannies.
For Nasser’s commitment to the ill-fated Arab nationalism slogan and to political effort divorced from all moral scruple , severely and in the current event alienated the Brothers, and in the eyes of this new dictatorship they were only two kinds of Muslim Brothers those who supported the status quo and those who should be in jail.
Sayyid Qotb was put in jail , there he took up his pen again , and like many Thinkers before and since in the History of the Islamic World, his authenticity was to be indirectly confirmed by a spell behind bars; while imprisonment has always been a great spur to scholarship and reflection , as Qotb went on to compile on a Quranic exegesis “Fi dhilal Al Qu’ran “ ( In the Shade of the Quran) , a classical work of scholarly piety that many regard as rivalling the major traditional works of commentary on the scripture of Islam.
Upon his release from prison in 1964, Qotb did not relax his Islamic conscience; rather he went to publish a controversial stirring work of prose entitled: “Maalim fi Attarik”
(Milestones on the path), such relevant achievement provoked the corrupt rulers at that time, and inevitably proved to be a preface for Qotb’s Martyrdom.
When tried in 1965 for “plotting” against the Egyptian régime, Sayyid Qotb with a challenging bravery and beyond comparison faith reminiscent of the first Martyrs of the Beloved Prophet’s Household (PBUH) such as Imam Hussein, Zayd Ibn Ali or Abdullah Al Kamil Ibn Al Hassan Mouthana or the first Close Companions such as Yassir or Al Khabab Ibn Al Irth, not only conceded the accusation but expatiated.
Qotb went on to argue that defiance of evil structures was an Islamic duty and Loyalty to God and the Community of Islam supersedes a profane fealty to Egyptian and Arab nationalism, no wonder that Qotb was calling evil by its name and thereby endangering his life, but with the utmost faith he saw it as the only way to obey the Divine imperative.
As a result of this great Godly faith conviction and despite the many intercessions for his life from many leaders around the Islamic world, even the Late blind Sheikh Abdul Hamid Kishk was tortured in jail for refusing to make the fatwa for his death, but much to the Islamic world ‘s chagrin on the 29th of August 1966, Sayyid was executed by the evil régime at that time , his complete trust in Almighty Allah and patient Endurance in the hour of trial were destined to become exemplary for all Muslims.
Regarding his executioner the quick Divine answer came as rapid as no one predicted so and in less than one year he was profoundly defeated , humiliated and drained the cup to the dregs in the “ six day war” in June 1967 reflecting the true Divine retribution:

“Thus do we make the wrong-doers turn to each other, because of what they earn”. Holy – Quran 6-129.
As for the Great Martyr, Sayyid kotb the perpetual Divine reminder is still reverberating:

“Behold! Verily on the Friends (Awliyya) of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve”. Holy –Quran 10-62.
